Less than three years ago, I wrote about Reflections & Ch-Ch- Changes, in which I left my long-time position at Swiff-Train to work at Strike. Now, I’m on the cusp of a new change. This one is more stressful than those because, for the first time since May 1992, I’m unemployed.
There are all the euphemisms—I was terminated, let go, released, or, more bluntly, fired. Oddly enough, I’m more disappointed than angry. The short version of events was a data center move that went badly, exposing several flaws in our systems and resulting in an outage. There was blame to share. However, it was my project, and I felt my responsibility. I accept that. I’ve learned from that. The gory details are for a private conversation with an adult beverage or two.
The result is that I’m looking for work! I’ve posted on LinkedIn, updated my resume, and spread the word to recruiters (10 of them, in fact)—crickets. I’ve applied for dozens of jobs and barely gotten a dozen phone screening calls. Why?
My guess is that, for the month of October, many businesses were waiting to see the result of the US presidential election. Regardless of your political leaning, one candidate was undoubtedly seen as more favorable to businesses. Okay, so we’re three weeks past that. What’s the story now?
I have gotten more nibbles and have kept busy getting ready for Live 360. I also have a two-day workshop I’m teaching in December. Otherwise, I’m working towards some more certifications and keeping my chin up 🙂
Wish me luck!
